Biography

Janet JonesIn 1982, Janet Jones qualified as a Hairstylist, Beautician and Wigmaker at Leigh College, Lancashire, England. Her intention was always to work at the leading edge of the Hair and Beauty industry.

Aiming her talents at this level enabled her to develope her career in Top Salons in Manchester and London. During this time she was also working freelance as a stylist/make-up artist to Janet's make up workfashion photographers and covered many fashion shows for Pierre Alexandre in Manchester.

Whilst Janet was working on shows such as Miss Jean Brodie, Carousel and many more at the Royal Exchange Theatre in Manchester, she was headhunted to work on a production of the famous Broadway show, 42nd Street at London's Theatre Royal, Drury Lane. This offered Janet the opportunity to work on period styles, which she still incorporates in her Portrait Photography today.

Shows Janet has Worked on

After working in the theatre for several years and still in her early 20's, like many young people Janet felt she wanted a year out to travel. By this time, Janet had become known, amongst friends and family, for being a little more than enthusiastic about photography.

Places Janet has Travelled to

Packing her camera equipment and stocking up with film, she headed for Canada with no plans! Her trip lasted a total of two years and she found herself in Canada, America and Mexico. Still with itchy feet when she returned, she ventured to Europe for a while.

When she eventually returned to London, she was offered a job as a Beauty Consultant with Christian Dior in london's West End stores, from Harrods to Selfridges.

After five years in the capital, she was ready for a calmer city, so headed North to Edinburgh, Scotland. Bridal Work in Scotland

Her time there was very productive. Janet developed her own successful business as a Freelance Hair and Make-up Artist. Amongst her clients were Edinburgh's two five star hotels, the Caledonian and the Balmoral. she also specialised in Wedding Hair and Make-up, which took her to many corners of Scotland from elegant hotels in Perthshire to castles in the Borders.

Balmoral CastleBusiness was excellent, but as with many self employed people, she found working on her own very lonely. After reading an article in the Hairdresser's Journal (trade mag) that there were 20,000 freelance hairdressers in the UK (1990), she wondered if they were all feeling as isolated as she was. There was no one to share business ups and downs with, no one to go on training seminars with and most importantly, no one to go on Christmas parties with! Her experience as a freelance Hair and Make-up Artist inspired her to set up the FHBF (Freelance Hair and Beauty Federation).

In 1994, Janet's life was turned upside down and, as with all circumstances like this, big changes were to be made. One of these changes was that Janet had to stand down as Director and Founder Member of the FHBF and move to Halifax, W.Yorks. Janet has spent the last ten years, in what she says is the most challenging job of her career, as a full time mum raising three children. However, not satisfied with just the one challenge, Janet also studied marketing (Advanced CIM) Computer software, from Office to Photoshop and Dreamweaver website design. The most significant change was to finally study the love of her life and she gained a BA Hons in Photography at Bradford Art College in 2005.
